I've mentioned a few times on the site that pulling a Frank Kozik's 'Mecadunny' from Dunny - Series 5 blindbox is what made me want to figure out what the hell Dunnys were and if there were more badass things like this. What's funny though is that wasn't my first Dunny. Years back my wife picked up a blindbox from Newbury Comics for my birthday and I ended up pulling a Queen Andrea from Series 2. Maybe because it was 'too girlie' it didn't really spark an interest at the time. I know if I had pulled a Deph from that series I would have definitely started looking into it more back then. :)

Being a geek, my first one was a Android Mini Special Edition-Snowman Flakes by Gary Ham, I bought it directly from Andrew Bell store, DeadZebra, then a case of green ones. Later tryed to find Android - Series 1 and the addiction started.

Even if my favourite toy is the 3" Dunny in general, I remember being very amused by Cardboy Sneakers (as a product designer a toy wich is also a shoebox is something I had to get :D). So I bougth this one as one of my first toys: http://trampt.com/designer-toys/15392/untitled-cardboy-sneakers-mark-james-strangeco
But I have to say that there were a very long time that I was watching all the Toys of some local stores in Brussels but as at that time I was still using real vinyl (disc) to mix at parties and become an active DJ on the Belgian scene, my piggybank said "you got to choose between too crazyness, I can't afford both"

this little baby started it all. i was on FARK and noticed an ad in the margin for kidrobot. i browsed the site and almost fell off my chair laughing at the prices for "toys". but this guys stuck in my head. the minute i took the plunge, it was all over.

I started collecting when my friend got me into the Dunny 2Tone series. I really wanted the McBess Dunny, now I have it. I just need the Gary Baseman one(s) to finish that series.

I remeber getting a couple of Qees for christmas one year, one was Cucu Mouse by Kei Sawada and the other (which I can't seem to find in the library *gasp!*) was the Whale (?) by Phil Corbett. I've got a couple of old photos here and here but they're not really suitable for the library.
Although I never picked up any more Qees (because they were hard to find where I live) I soon found out about Dunnys and well...you know how it goes! First Dunny: Mad Agent by MAD (Jeremy Madl).

I started collecting 3" Kat Qee years ago after buying a Tokidoki (Simone Legno) handbag with a Meomi cat qee on it (powder cat). For years I would just pick up a few here and there...and then this year happened.
My daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and during the very very long days in the hospital we did a lot of online shopping as a way to get our minds off of reality. It started again with trying to find some of the older qees I hadn't managed to get my hands on...and from there it blossomed into an obsession as I discovered (with the help of two collection tracking sites, this one included of course) that there was a lot more out there, and being in love with Japanese art as I am, it was a natural fit.
Now we're home and I am in the process of filling my house and loving it :D

hhyatt v That sounds exciting! Best of luck...you'll have to let me know what display cases you end up with. I'd like to have proper ones myself someday. over 10 years ago
Easily_Amused Will do! Once I have it up I will also post some pics. over 10 years ago
For me it was Devil Ned Flanders and a case of Android - Series 2. A year later, we're running out of places to put things (the joys of living in a small apartment) but wouldn't change a thing. We've met some amazing people, both on and offline and on a more personal level, collecting has helped kill a long standing artist block.

I only started collecting last December and I can honestly say my interest was sparked after watching two artist spotlights for a PS3 game called Modnation Racers, on Jesse Hernandez and Huck Gee. Didn't start collecting straight away, but after reading a few posts about collecting from fellow South African Vinyl Destination on our local PS3 forum, I googled the addiction and went out on eBay to get my hands on Kronk's Gingerman. :) The bug then bit.
Very shortly after I thought there must be a website to catalogue my growing collection and glanced over a very boring looking Rotocasted, found Trampt and the rest is history.

I'd been kinda warily circling the designer toy hobby for a while, admiring stuff I saw in Juxtapoz but being too goddamn mystified by the whole thing to step in. Until Andrew Bell's Androids. I only wanted a standard green one... until I saw the Series 1 designs. I missed out on those, so I ponied up for a couple of Series 2 blind boxes when they cam out and the obsession just grew from there. The Android Series turned out to be a gateway drug, and through it I discovered the likes of Scott Tolleson, Gary Ham, Sket One, Huck Gee and tons of other artists.
To make matters worse, I seem to have picked up the customizing bug and have two custom projects on my plate as I type this. I spend all day being creative on a computer and blowing with the winds of executive decisions, so having a project where I can get my hands dirty with paint and clay and dangerous chemicals and work just to please myself is a welcome respite.

blake a I like this post, also, I just stalked your twitter (forgive me) and I like that you have typography as a background. One of these days I would love to commission a custom toy. Like picking a tattoo maybe I will just ruminate on it for another year or 5. about 10 years ago
schnabeetz v Thanks blake. Stalked and followed, good sir. I promise I'll post up my custom work when I'm done. It's slow going and I'm making plenty of mistakes, but I'm meeting scads of talented people online who are generous with their knowledge and patient with teh noobz. about 10 years ago
for me it was simply a good friend of mine buying me a DIY Munny. After making my first customization i then bought my first seriese ever .Dunny - 2010. my story isn't amazing like most of you though.

Jason Sho Green got me in to toys. I saw someone post his work on myspace (about 100 years ago) then started looking in to his work and saw some custom munnies he did. Then the ball started rolling!!

I have two firsts (bought them at the same time). They were a couple blind box pulls from the Kidrobot 2009 Dunny Series - one was the MAD blue ape and the other was the Kozik smoking chef. I was instantly hooked! The stylistic approach of Mad and the humor and re-interpretation of the medium by Kozik were amazing. I have no idea why I bought them to begin with (I didn't even really know what they were) but I'm so glad I did! Although...my wallet was conspicuously more full before that day I started purchasing...

My first item was a kidrobot one, but not a dunny though. It was an Debilz series Eduoard by Mist. I really liked the figure and only found out much later that my first figure was a very rare one. From there, I started collecting other things including dunnys of course... and towards other pieces, and eventually to my collection of customs. There was no turning back... :-)
A turnaround pic of the Debilz Eduoard in my flickr.

I can't point to any one item that got me started. I don't even remember my first purchase any more. I do remember that I read an article about an architect in the weekend Wall Street Journal and his house was covered in vinyl and prints and I thought at the time I'd love for my family room and office to look like that. So I started collecting pretty seriously after that point.

masao626 i love this! i'm pretty thoroughly obsessed with displays and integrating collections into decor and this sounds like an inspired start to collecting! about 11 years ago
I got started just last month. I'm a robot programmer and like robot things. I have robot artwork hanging up at home and my daughter has tons of robot onesies and I have a few humorous robot shirts. Anyways we went to Disney World and we were looking for souvenir's and I spotted the blind box robot mix-up. I love vinyl records and thought badass vinyl toys so I bought 4 boxes opened them up and they were pretty cool. Went online a few days later and found this whole crazy world of awesomeness vinyl toys and my collection has gotten quite large quite fast haha.
