Mahogany is a timber greatly prized for ship-building, due to its great strength and weather-resisting qualities, but the weather of Central America can be some of the most ferocious in the world, and the use of this expensive material is by no means a guarantee against shipwreck. While of little consolation to the crew of such a shipwreck, the timbers of these doomed vessels refuse to lay down and die. Essentially mindless, the Hurricane Monkey lives only to survive, to weather the fiercest storms and to resist destruction until the end of time. Although he is an elemental natural force, and not the product of Monkey design, he is nonetheless a powerful mythical figure, representing the folly of opposing the forces of nature. He has gained much stature in recent years, with the depletion of the rainforests where he originated becoming an issue of international importance.
