About this Medium

Graphite is a versatile and widely used medium in art, primarily known for its soft, smooth texture and the ability to create fine details, shading, and gradients. It comes in the form of pencils or sticks, with varying degrees of hardness, ranging from very soft (6B, 8B) to very hard (H, 2H). The softness or hardness of the graphite determines the darkness or lightness of the marks it produces. When used in drawing, graphite allows artists to achieve a range of effects, from precise, sharp lines to soft, velvety shading. It is often favored for its ability to create tonal depth and realistic textures, making it a popular choice for portraiture, still life, and landscape drawing. Its subtlety and versatility also make it ideal for sketching and underpainting for larger works. Rivet is a designer toy shop and micro art gallery in Columbus, Ohio. Rivet in collaboration with Igloo Letterpress welcomes back the second annual group exhibition Be My Valentine. Channeling the days of Valentine greetings being handed out at elementary school, the nervousness of silly little crushes and fears of rejections past. This is a modern-day twist on the little Valentine square. 40+ artists (local, national and international) were given a 4in x 5in one-sided card to create their Valentine. Whether your heartstrings are of song or scorn, you'll be sure to find one that meets your heart's desire. An opening reception will be held tomorrow Saturday, February 7 from 7-10pm with some artists in attendance. Joe Scarano was born in Warwick, NY in 1975. He was raised alongside a litter of sisters in Miami, FL and later in Bethpage, NY. During the day Joe works as an online art director for a non-profit consumer advocacy group. He spends his nights painting characters and environments that recall the odd early days of animation and the dingy despair of the 1930's. With their popsicle stick bucktoothed grins, hollow heads and dead eyes his characters often straddle the lines between funny, tragic, grotesque, and sad. He currently lives in Orange County, NY with his wife Marci, son Mason, and several furry creatures.
