At first it was a living hell really, and it was art and music that helped transport me away. Although her mother had plans for her to have a career in medicine she had other ideas, and with the support of her headmistress and art teacher they managed to persuade my reluctant parents to let her study graphic design, which as it turned out was absolutely useless.She studied ‘old school’ methods, that’s to say, cut and paste by hand. Computers had not quite come to her college yet, but by the time she left they were the new way. To add insult to injury, after she graduated and was looking for work, schlepping her portfolio all over town — it was promptly stolen, and she had nothing to show for her years in college. Lucky for her, this time wasn’t a total loss — because it would be the town where she’d meet her Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a neologism for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word "giclée" is derived from the French language word "le gicleur" meaning "nozzle", or more specifically "gicler" meaning "to squirt, spurt, or spray". It was coined in 1991 by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working in the field, to represent any inkjet-based digital print used as fine art. The intent of that name was to distinguish commonly known industrial "Iris proofs" from the type of fine art prints artists were producing on those same types of printers. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such prints.
