About this Venue
Jonathan Levine Projects is committed to new and cutting edge art. Our roots go back to 1995 when LeVine's life-long participation in punk and underground music grew into a curatorial experiment with the visual culture that surrounded him. In 2005, he opened Jonathan LeVine Gallery in the Chelsea district of New York City and had great success nurturing the careers of many celebrated artists. In 2017, the gallery relocated to Jersey City with a newfound focus on community and collaboration. The newly named Jonathan LeVine Projects aims to create engaging programs and interesting partnerships beyond the traditional gallery space. With an eye towards honoring and connecting with the history and context of Post War art, Jonathan LeVine Projects explores the terrain of the high/low and everything in between. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He is Illustrator, Street- and Graffitiartist and mainly known for his prolific street art concept, the RABBIT EYE MOVEMENT. „One story I want to tell to the audience. This one is all about “holy media” and how it brainfucks us. You see a lot of old stuff which I recycle because it’s been part of my youth. Stuff what I liked, cartoons I loved like the teenage mutant ninja turtles or skate symbols like the screaming hand. Many of our generation have a connection to those things because we know it and mostly because we’ve been watching TV all our childhood. At least that happened to me, hahaha. But I think we all would be painting like we paint without the media influence Pop art would not be existent and that’s our roots. I call our generation the NINTENDO GENERATION and you will see, it’s already happening.“Use of liquid ink as a material to create art, typically by applying it to a surface like paper with a pen or brush, allowing artists to produce drawings, paintings, or calligraphy by utilizing its fluidity and color properties to form images or text; essentially, it's a versatile tool for creating artwork through the application of colored liquidNEW YORK, NY (June 10, 2016) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present IKON, a solo exhibition of new work by Austrian artist Nychos is what will be his debut solo exhibition at the gallery. Nychos is a street artist, illustrator and painter whose signature style blends themes of morbid corporeality with a colorful, outlandish aesthetic. Inspired by comics, heavy metal, graffiti and his upbringing in a traditional Viennese hunting family, his work reveals the skeletal and internal structure of cartoon-like characters. With impeccable attention to detail, Nychos implements methods of “dissection, cross-section, meltdown and translucence” to juxtapose the beauty and grotesque nature of the body. For IKON, Nychos created a portrait series of celebrities and fictional characters whose images have been burned into our minds and we’ve grown accustomed to perceiving superficially. With a particular focus on icons from the 1980s, this new body of work shows the profound influence that media had on the artist during his formative years. By dismantling their anatomy he explores the humanity that exists underneath the mask of celebrity and confronts viewers with the core elements we all have in common: flesh and bones. This new series of work explores the evolution of pop culture
