Hiya, I just wanted to ask. With limited edition art, gig and mondo posters or prints (etc etc) should I use matting when I have them framed or not? It's just I always have and I think a well chosen mat makes the poster or print look better, helps them stand out if you will. I also know I should be storing them in flat file storage but 1) I've no money to buy a flat file storage unit and 2) we haven't the space in the house anyway even though I want to. So as bad as it is I have to store them in tubes until they are framed. Anyways thanks that's all I wanted to ask; peace and long life, and all that lol...

Having a print rest directly against the glass is a big no no. Don't do it if you can avoid it. If it is merely a cheap poster then I wouldn't worry about it. Also, make sure the matting and the backing are acid free. Unfortunately, proper framing is ungodly expensive.

Easily_Amused LOL! finding a good archival framer is my biggest stumbling block on getting all my pieces framed. over 11 years ago
Sooky The place I go to here in town does archival framing, so I get them archivally mounted with acid free card mat. I can't afford the full archival cloth matting nor the UV protected glass or perspex, but I don't keep them in direct sunlight anyway. Okay thanks guys that's a weight off my mind!!! ^_^ over 11 years ago
Always Matt & frame your collectables or limited edition prints just from preservation purposes alone. There is more benefits to Matt's than making your image pop with color they keep the print from sticking to the glass.Framing isn't cheap just for that reason but there's a whole lot more to it than pure aesthetics. I use to be a custom frame specialist.

Of my 50+ prints I think I have like 20 prints matted & framed ... maybe a little more. Nearly all of them are just matted in white with a 1" black frame. My wife always wants to pick matte's that match the print more, and I think for 2 of them we did that. I don't know if I'm the only one, but we move them around all the time so I like that they're all framed the same ... kind of weird that way I guess.

Sooky I guess I'm a bit like your wife then, as I always pick matting and frames that match the poster or print. But then I'm the sorta person who chooses a landline phone set based purely on aesthetics but couldn't use them cuz the frequency they were on conflicted with our wifi and other stuff lol... over 11 years ago
Sooky Okay so that's cool, it's really a personal choice then up to the individual. I guess it's also cuz many of the photos of framed concert and mondo posters I've seen online didn't seem to have any matting so it just made me wonder is all... over 11 years ago
I just got this back from the framers today, what do you guys think? It isn't the best photo sorry, a bit blurry. My hands are shaky today, oh well. But do you like? ^_^

Sooky So yeah I doubt they'll ever be able to release the entire collection in order of release, but to be fair the production values on Old Who compared to New Who was pretty damned woeful though conceptually brilliant and totally unique... over 11 years ago
Easily_Amused I loved the old show a bit better than the new show because it was campy and cheesy and brilliant. over 11 years ago
Well thanks guys this conversation/thread will give those who are just starting to collect prints and posters some good advice on framing and matting, and has confirmed what I already knew to be true in my mind. Cuz I doubt myself a lot I sometimes just need confirmation on something like this. You all rock, as far as I'm concerned...

Sooky It also goes without saying that when you hang your posters or prints it shouldn't be in direct sunlight and away from a major heat source; i.e. a window, heater etc etc. But if you do want to put it near a window or in a sunlit room make sure the glass or perspex is UV protected. Kay toodles things to do... over 11 years ago
If you see a print unmatted, it's probably because the person didn't want to spend the extra money. For posters (generally one sheet or bigger) the cost is so much most people just skip it.
