Stick to your Strengths. Know what your best at and make that the Major Part of your customizing, such as sculpting, painting/drawing, attaching things etc. If that kicks ass, where you slack in one or two of the others they wont stick out as much because you nailed the "BIG PICTURE"

one thing I can say is.....buy what is pleasing to you, maybe only have a handful of artist you are committed to collecting, stay away from open editions,start making more friends in and around this industry like store owners. I collect art as well so I'm kinda used to wheelin and dealin for the best price.

Easily_Amused I'm definitely interested in making friends who share my proclivities! I collected art first, and stumbled into Art Toys myself. Unfortunately, I live in a place with no Art Toy Galleries that I know of to go into and instead cruise the internet stores. However, I've found it is really easy to compare prices for art toys and find the best deals (Unlike Art) doing this. about 12 years ago

ripping of the head (or arms) of something in order to paint the bottom side more easily...only to discover that putting that part back on is ridiculously difficult.

Necktie v the biggest instance of this was a dunny i was customizing for my girlfriend. i wanted it to be a smooth paint job, so i popped the head off to give it an even coat. couldn't get the damn thing on afterwards so i had to break out pliers. needless to say, scrapped the shit out of the head. had to basically start from scratch! about 12 years ago

Taos v Yeah I just finished my first custom and pulling back the head made me nervous but it is needed if you want to paint it everywhere. over 11 years ago

i learned the hard way use water base paint markers to do ccustomizing they dry nice and you can clear coat without smearing your work.

Are you looking for advice on customizing your own toys, like what's the biggest mistake a customizer has made while working on something?  Or are you looking for advice on commissioning piecees?  There's a few people with some big custom collections that you could probably talk to if that's what you're looking for.  I know vinyltoyz and ninjaskills both have pretty large custom collections with varied artists.  Ninja seems to stick mainly to one platform (Mad*L's).

Easily_Amused Actually I'm interested in both the collectors perspective and the artists perspective for mistakes made purchasing or creating customs. As a collector I'd like to learn from others mistakes, and learn what artist have dealt with when creating them. But, I hope what is shared is useful to more than just me, and who knows I might go kindergarten project on a Dunny (Kindergarten is my artistic skill level. LOL!). about 12 years ago
