One fourth of a dazzling four piece or tetraptych set in Norm Maxwell's 'Contrast in Captivity' Series from 2012 I absolutely had to add to my collection because I love the stark contrast of the powdery acrylic on gold canvas. The figures in the painting though simplistic, elegant and regal create in me a debate as to whether the artist was being an iconoclast by overthrowing the symbolism of the meek Christ Mother, the Madonna by depicting her as a gleefully urban yet seemingly empowered and gun toting, cig smoking single mom OR.... if he has stylishly married the heavens to the earth. Much more than that though, to me the lines that compose this piece are why I had to get it... the minimal nod to cubism I see in this painting whisper in my ear... Pablo Picasso, Doze green, Jeremy Szuder and my favorite outsider artist of all time MAXON CRUMB..... yup Robert's lil bro.... look that up sometime after you check out NORMMAXWELL.com... one of my modern favorites.
